Focus on Faro Town

Faro town is located just 15 minutes from Almancil . It has a population in excess of 40,000 people. The majority of the older buildings were built after the terrible earthquakes of 1755 and 1532.
Take a stroll down to the older part of the city that is surrounded by Roman walls. Inside the square that was once the site of the Roman Forum is a 13th Century Cathedral that faces the 18th Century Episcopal palace. Another must see is the golden church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo. This has the best example of gold-leaf woodwork in southern Portugal as well as a chapel lined with the bones of over 1200 monks.
There are many traditional and international shops and cafes dotted around the winding paths in Faro.  There is also a marina with a small Naval Museum.
