Useful Portuguese Phrases |

It is a good idea for holiday makers to learn some useful phrases in Portuguese. In The Algarve and The Golden Triangle in particular, the majority of people in the tourist industry speak perfect English but it is always nice to try and greet in Portuguese.

Greetings

olá – hi, hello

bom dia – good morning

boa tarde – good afternoon, good evening (from noon until dark)

boa noite – good evening (after dark); good night

adeus – goodbye

fala inglês? – do you speak English?

não falo português – I don’t speak Portuguese

não falo muito português – I don’t speak much Portuguese

falo um pouco português – I speak a little Portuguese

por favor fale mais devagar – please speak more slowly

eu compreendo – I understand
